The Abarat Series

As of October 2011 the Abarat series is formed of three books, Abarat (2002), Abarat: Days of Magic, Nights of War (2004) and Abarat: Absolute Midnight (2011). Two further books, Abarat: Dynasty of Dreamers and Abarat: The Eternal are proposed.

Featured Character - Christopher Carrion

Christopher Carrion is one of the main characters and antagonists in the Abarat series, first appearing in Abarat where he is shown to take an interest in the adventures of the human girl Candy Quackenbush, who has inadvertently entered the world of the Islands of Abarat.

Carrion is soon revealed to have been raised by his grandmother, Mater Motley, after his mother and siblings were killed in a raging fire. Mater Motley raised Carrion strictly and brought him up to share her belief in the goal of absolute midnight, a state where all the islands of the Abarat would eternally be plunged into darkness. Loathing anything verging on sentiment, Mater Motley sewed up Christopher's mouth once when he uttered the word 'love'.

Later in the series it is revealed that Carrion was deeply in love with Princess Boa, who he was teaching magic. Although she treated him with kindness and respect, Princess Boa did not love Carrion and rejected his offer of marriage. Enraged by her refusal of him, Carrion sent a dragon to kill the Princess on her wedding day to Finnegan Hob. Carrion was grief-strucken and experienced intense guilt after the death of Princess Boa, and fell even deeper into self-loathing.

Carrion was drawn to Candy without realizing why, and spied on her from afar before eventually ordering some of his henchman to capture her and bring her into his presence. Although various initial attempts failed, Carrion's efforts eventually paid off and Candy was brought to the island of Efreet where he confronted her.
